Descriptions of Liothyronine Sodium
Liothyronine sodium is a synthetic (man-made) version of one of the two hormones made by the thyroid gland, triiodothyronine. It is used for treating individuals who are hypothyroid (do not produce enough thyroid hormones). Thyroid hormones increase the metabolism (activity) of all cells in the body. In the fetus, newborn infant and child, thyroid hormones promote growth and development of tissues. In adults, thyroid hormones help to maintain the function of the brain, the use of food by the body, and body temperature. The FDA approved liothyronine in May 1956.
Uses about Liothyronine Sodium
Liothyronine is used for treating myxedema coma or precoma (life-threatening symptoms caused by low thyroid levels). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.Liothyronine is a thyroid hormone. It works by supplementing the natural thyroid hormones in the body.Liothyronine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally made by the thyroid gland. Liothyronine is a man-made form of thyroid hormone. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone helps you stay healthy. For children, having enough thyroid hormone helps them grow and learn normally. This medication is also used to treat other types of thyroid problems (such as certain types of goiters, thyroid cancer). It can also be used to test for certain types of thyroid disease.
How to take liothyronine?
Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about liothyronine and will also provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you could experience from taking it.
Take liothyronine exactly as your doctor tells you to. It is usual for your doctor to give you a small dose (such as ½-1 tablet a day) when you first take liothyronine, and then for your dose to be gradually increased to two or three tablets daily, taken spaced out throughout the day.
Take the tablet with a drink of water. You can crush it if it makes it easier for you to swallow. You can take liothyronine either before or after meals.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Try to take the correct number of doses each day but do not ‘double up’ to make up for any missed doses.
